The Vocal Jazz Ensemble
About Us
The Whatcom Sound Jazz Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a group of singers dedicated to the study and performance of quality jazz literature and sharing it with the community. The VJE is our original ensemble, featuring talented, non-professional Soprano and Alto singers, as well as three instrumentalists and a artistic director. With eight singers we maintain a representation of two singers per part. The ensemble sings a variety of jazz standards, contemporary jazz, pop cross-over, and some original arrangements (created specifically for the group).
The ensemble offers singers the opportunity for higher level professional guidance. Several singers work in other jazz projects and mention the knowledge and guidance gained here have positively impacted these projects. The singers enjoy working in a team setting that allows for experimentation, especially in developing intentional vocal choices and in vocal improvisation.
The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is also for hire for events or concerts. The group works generally with a rhythm section. However, for smaller venues or budgets, the ensemble also sings with backing tracks or acappela.
We occasionally have openings, and interested singers are encouraged to contact us even if there are no openings. Your name can be added to a waiting list for future openings. Email info.wsjs@gmail.com for more information, and to set up your audition. More information about audition requirements can be found here. Tuition for the Vocal Jazz Ensemble is based on a sliding scale of $200-$300 per semester. Not quite ready for this commitment? Consider joining our mixed Jazz Choir instead!
