Wine, Women & Song

with special guests Lulu Swing

On Nov 13, 2019 Whatcom Sound Jazz Singers presented "Wine, Women & Song" at Lairmont Manor, a well-loved annual event for more than a decade. Together with Lulu Swing, a Seattle based all-female Gypsy jazz band, we celebrated women taking the stage in jazz.   Lulu Swing featured cabaret performer and jazz soloist Delilah Beaucoup, who took on the character of an elegant, sassy and affable French chanteuse Diva.  Following an intermission where guests enjoyed wine as well as foods donated by local businesses, WSJS gave their best performance yet, culminating with "La Vie en Rose" featuring Lulu Swing, our own Karen Goens, and an audience sing-along!

Spring Concert

Our final event of the 2018/2019 season was a full length daytime Spring Concert at the lovely Bellewood Acres on Sunday, May 19.  This was a family-friendly concert.   Out on Bellewood's open air stage, with Mt. Baker as our backdrop, we performed a lively set including new repertoire and WSJS favorites along with a few surprises.  Local young jazz musician Sage Romey dazzled our audience with her incredible voice and improvisation skills.   Our talented trio (Conner Helms on keyboard, Melanie Sehman on Drums and Sarah Yates on bass) backed us up brilliantly, and our artistic director played saxophone!

F.A.M.E.  (Female Artists Music Extravaganza!)

On Saturday March 2, 2019, Whatcom Sound Jazz  performed with special guest, Seattle jazz vocalist Gail Pettis.  The choristers also had the valuable opportunity to learn from this seasoned jazz artist in a pre-concert workshop.  WSJS performed our exciting new repertoire with Gail joining forces on two numbers for a powerful explosion of song!  Gail ignited the evening with her solo repertoire backed up by members of Bellingham's own Gypsy Jazz Quintet, Nuages.  A native of Kentucky and currently based in Seattle, Gail delighted our audience with her rich, warm vocals and understated phrasing.

Wine, Women, and Song

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at the stunning Lairmont Manor, Whatcom Sound Jazz performed a tribute to the late, great Aretha Franklin, featuring three songs made popular by Aretha.  Our special guest Marina Albero, gave a mesmerizing solo performance on the piano and hammer dulcimer.  She also added an exciting and dramatic flair to some of the choir's pieces by playing and soloing with us.  Currently based in Seattle, Marina Albero studied in Barcelona and Havana, and she  plays in many styles including latin, flamenco, early music and andalusie.  Marina loves composing and improvising with a wide personal language carved by her colorful background.  We were honored to perform with Marina.
